Interesting new direction

Last night I was reading the September 2004 issue of THE WIRE. For the record, this is quite possibly the best music magazine ever. Anyway...

The "Epiphanies" section was particularly interesting this month. Geeta Dayal writes about how she and her parents had for years shared very different musical interests. They were (presumably) raised in India; she is of Indian heritage but was born and raised in America. Cultural differences were always a source of tension and frustraion between her and her parents, particularly when it came to music.

To make a long story short, as Dayal's musical interestes grew she realized that she had been wrong about her parents; particularily her father. She studied Indian music composition and eventually learned that he listened differently. He "found beauty in endless repetition, discerned shape in sounds that seemed shapeless." Her awareness of musical styles allowed her to find a common musical currency she could share with him.

She explores this idea further. Of particular interest to me was the discussion of pattern repetition in Indian music, and how this is linked to minimalism. Patterns, long musical forms, complex musical systems...all of this is very interesting and warrants further study.
