Qi & Complexity

Working on a new composition for the conference Consciousness Reframed 2004: Qi & Complexity...

While this is an odd combination when one first hears it, I find that the two make a natural pair. The difficulty is in articulating this connection; one which I feel intuitively.

One guiding thought comes from County Tam of Hong Kong:

"Traditional Chinese art is more about expression than representation. We feel the qi of calligraphy as much as the master expresses his relation with nature through qi. We can travel in a landscape painting not because it represents reality precisely. It is the artist's qi that brings us to his state of being there. Qi is the artist's inner feelings that [are] visualized in art, it is the abstract expression of the artist's mental and body state (as oneness) and this expression is the result of the artist's life long seeking of harmony through his practice of self cultivation - meditation, "eat qi" (breathing), morality (no matter it is Confucian or Zhuang zi standard), and behavior."

He seems to suggest that expression emerges through one's artistic process, and that Qi is the vehicle for this. This is the only statement I have read that puts my feelings into words. It is especially resonant because the idea of emergence is central to my compositions. As the work progresses, I hope to discover a way to express this in my own voice.
